According to the Rocky Mountain News, a federal jury awarded nearly $2 million to a man who was struck in the head when a Wilson golf club came apart during a swing. The plaintiff rice was injured while golfing with his son. The club, a pitching wedge, came apart when the son swung it. The club's shaft was too narrowly ground and improperly fastened to the head, according to testimony during the trial. He lost his job and his home in foreclosure because of his injuries, according to testimony

Moretz Sports has signed agreements to sponsor professional ultramarathon runner Pam Reed and international mountain guide Dave Hahn. The announcement was made by Ander Horne, Vice President, Marketing, Moretz Sports. In addition to wearing PowerSox while performing their respective sports, Reed and Hahn will provide Moretz Research & Design with field testing data and each will contribute to online journals covering their sporting lives at www.powersox.com. They will also make appearances at PowerSox promotional eventsThe endorsements by performing athletes are a first for Moretz Sports, celebrating its sixtieth anniversary this year. The company currently has licensing and lifestyle branding business relationships with NFL legends Ronnie Lott and John Elway; and lifestyle businesswoman, Kathy Ireland. Said Ander Horne, Vice President, Marketing, Moretz Sports, “Pam Reed and Dave Hahn represent a new breed of extreme athlete. We couldn't be happier that PowerSox will be on their feet as they push onward in their sports.”

New Era Cap Co. announced that its Vice President of Global Human Resources, Timothy J. Freer, has been appointed to the Fair Labor Association's Board of Directors. Freer will hold one of six Industry Representative positions on the board; the position has a three year term and is renewable. New Era affiliated with the Fair Labor Association (FLA) in October 2002 and became a Participating Company in 2004. As part of its affiliation, New Era has committed to the FLA's international labor standards, has subjected all of its production facilities to unannounced annual inspections and audits, as well as creating internal programs aimed at improving workplace conditions. Said New Era Cap's Vice President of Global Human Resources Timothy J. Freer. “My election to the Board is a direct reflection of the level of commitment New Era has undertaken to maintaining the highest standard of working conditions at our facilities domestically and those we use around the world.”

Adidas and Lewis University, a leader in NCAA Division II athletics for more than 20 years, have agreed to a three-year partnership. The agreement makes adidas the official supplier of apparel, footwear, uniforms and accessories for the approximately 350 student athletes and 50 support-staff members who comprise the Flyers' 18-sport National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II program. As part of the deal, adidas will receive signage at various Lewis athletics venues and prominent logo placements in publications and on the LewisFlyers.com Web site.

Director of adidas Team Sales Richard Spanjian said, "We are excited to have Lewis University as part of the adidas family. The student athletes will now have the opportunity to compete in the finest footwear and apparel adidas makes."

"We are excited about this agreement, because it elevates Lewis University athletics to a new level," said Lewis University Director of Athletics Paul Zakowski. "By partnering with adidas, we're joining a family of schools that includes Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Nebraska. The deal provides financial benefits for the University and gives considerable savings to our programs on apparel, uniforms, equipment and footwear. It also gives us a uniform look among our teams that will help with our brand identity."

Mountain Hardwear announced that B. James Bottoms has been named to the new position of Director of Operations. Previous to starting at Mountain Hardwear in December 2005, Bottoms held the position of Director of Global Operations for Eagle Creek. Bottoms will will oversee the functional areas of customer service, forecasting/planning, sourcing/production, warranty/returns, management reporting and California-based warehouse operations.

Mike Wallenfels, president of Mountain Hardwear, said, “This is a new position for the company. Up until now managers of the departments which fall under operations reported directly to me. Bottoms has a powerful mixture of strategic planning and integration experience. I am confident that he will help to ensure the effective growth of our business.”

The William Morris Agency (WMA), the world's leading talent and literary agency, announced today that it has signed the National Hockey League for representation in several key areas of the entertainment industry. The NHL will work with WMA on the integration of NHL players and the NHL brand with various entertainment channels, including film, television, videos and new media; the development of integrated media and marketing relationships in the entertainment community; and the development of NHL-influenced television and film programming.

"With the NHL's exciting return to the ice, the league's future is bright and there are significant opportunities to utilize entertainment-based ventures to further extend the profile of its brand and its players," said Jim Wiatt, CEO of the William Morris Agency. AC/InterActiveCorp of New York plans to acquire Boston-based Shoebuy.com Inc., an internet retailer of footwear and related apparel. No financial details of the deal were released. Shoebuy’s founder and chief executive officer Scott Savitz will continue to oversee the company’s operations. IAC is a diversified holding company of businesses in sectors associated with the Internet.

Alleson Athletic Alleson Athletic appointed Nicole Lux as creative director. She will develop, build, and market apparel across all product categories focusing on sublimation printing techniques. “Sublimation is a new technological development in the custom apparel market,” said Todd Levine, VP/sales and marketing. “We are thrilled to be on the cutting edge of this new technology.” She comes to Alleson from Allied Duralux, a manufacturer of custom athletic apparel, where she was creative director, responsible for product development, design, and marketing.

Atsco Brands announced several new positions and promotions. New executive hires include: John Kelly named Chief Financial Officer of Atsco Brands; Joel Kaplan as the new Vice President/Director of Sourcing; Angela Petropoulos as the new Product Manager, ellesse footwear; and Bill Bratton, named Vice President of Sales, ellesse apparel. Promotions within the company include: Suzanne Hood, from Inside Sales and Operations to Director of Lelli Kelly; Brian Benko, from Account Executive to Regional Sales Manager; Gary Nohe, from Account Executive to Regional Sales Manager; and Chris Langathianos, promoted from KangaROOS Marketing Manager to Director of Corporate Marketing. Atsco Brands is the exclusive U.S. licensee for KangaROOS apparel and footwear, Lelli Kelly footwear and accessories, and ellesse footwear and apparel.

Keds, a subsidiary of Stride Rite Corp., has entered into a co-marketing deal with pop-rock duo The Veronicas and Sire Records for their Spring 2006 US tour. Keds is pairing up with the label for concert advertising and venue signage; along with radio promotions that include ticket give-aways and meet & greets; web promotions on www.keds.com with online links to band blogs and streaming music; and retail tie-ins to include in-store promotions and acoustic performances by The Veronicas at select stores. In addition, the group will perform a private concert for Keds and their guests on March 25th in Los Angeles, where the girls will take the stage in Keds' latest styles.

For the first time in company history, Aravon will launch a new consumer print advertising campaign to introduce their 2006 comfort performance footwear line. The campaign which will launch in March and is scheduled to appear in national magazines including Body &Soul, Natural Health, Spa, and Yoga Journal. The copy urges the consumer to “look closer” to discover that “the comfort is in the details.” The campaign uses strong visual imagery to convey the style of the shoes while touching on performance details in copy.
